The Museum of Cannock Chase
is pleased to welcome back local artist Pete Mason with
an exhibition of stamp images, Post Pop Art Too!
Pete is a painter and illustrator who has developed his work through
Pop Art and Graphics. Most recently Pete has been recycling postage
stamps into celebrity portraits, some of which use up to 20,000 stamps.
Pete buys most of his used stamps off paper from a dealer. A part
time teacher of art at local Kingsmead Technology College he gets
many of his stamps supplemented by pupils, parents and the local community.
By choosing the ordinary everyday objects of postage stamps and placing
them so that their usual significance becomes obscure enables the
audience to see 'Art' with new eyes. In this case he takes ordinary
things and combines them in extraordinary ways.
The exhibition includes Whaam! a tribute to Roy Lichtenstein and a
further tribute to Bridget Riley as an optical illusion. All other
works are portraits and include Simon Cowell, Princess Diana, Winston
Churchill and Gordon Brown as larger designs using between 15 and
20000 stamps. A number of smaller canvases have been included with
portraits of Terry Wogan, Nelson Mandella, Margaret Thatcher and Madeleine
McCann. These smaller works have used between 2500 and 3500 stamps.
More information regarding the work can be found on the websitewww.thepostpopartman.co.uk
The exhibition opens on 20th October and finishes on 14th November.
The Museum is open Monday to Friday from 11am to 4pm with last admission
at 3.30.
For further information or to arrange a photograph
please call Leon on 01543 877666.
