Second World War posters in the spotlight

A new exhibition at the Museum of Cannock Chase takes a fascinating look at the poster propaganda campaigns of the Second World War. Whether or not people lived though the war, almost everyone is familiar with slogans from that era like ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ and ‘Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases’. During the war, the government launched a propaganda campaign to galvanise public support and recruited some of the nation’s foremost artists and cartoonists to create a series of posters to encourage people to ‘do their bit’. Many hundreds of posters were produced by the Ministry of Information during the war to try to influence public opinion and to obtain support for the war effort. At that time, in the absence of television, posters were one of the main ways of reaching people. The exhibition – which runs until 25th June – features a selection of posters from the era, not only from Britain but also from the US. There are also copies of proclamations by the German forces to the people of the occupied territories of France and Jersey. Visitors will find posters by some of the most famous wartime propaganda campaign artists of the time. After looking at the exhibition, visitors can also see the 1940s Room at the museum – a faithfully recreated living room from the period which also features lots of information on the ‘Grown Your Own’ and ‘Make Do And Mend’ campaigns. The Museum of Cannock Chase – on Valley Road, Hednesford – is open daily from 11am to 5pm with last admission at 4.30pm. Admission is free. For more information, call the museum on 01543 877666 or log on to www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/museum
