EXHIBITIONS AND PROJECTS

Heavenly Spires and Headframes

Exhibition Dates:
9th January to 24th February 2012

Exhibition Venue:
Museum of Cannock Chase

The Museum of Cannock Chase’s 2012 exhibitions programme opens with the work of accomplished Burntwood artist David Brown MA. In forty years of painting and design, David has undertaken a wide range of artistic commissions featuring pets, people and places. Best known for his work as a portraitist and as a painter of animals, David’s latest exhibition explores the contrasting landscapes of the Cannock and Lichfield areas.

The exhibition features a series of paintings which explore the impact of the communities on the life and landscape of South Staffordshire from the mining community of Cannock Chase during the 19th and 20th centuries to that of the cathedral city of Lichfield prior to its rapid growth in the latter part of the last century. The exhibition takes as its central theme the landscapes of the ‘heavenly spires’ of Lichfield and the headframes of the collieries of Cannock Chase but also seeks to show how different life was in the two communities. His pictures include people at work and play, contrasting the theological and rural life in and around Lichfield with the mining and forestry activities of Cannock Chase.

One individual portrait of a miner is based on an old photograph and the artist is particularly keen to hear from anyone who recognises themselves or a member of their family from the painting. David has kindly offered to donate this portrait free of charge to anyone who can accurately identify the subject.

David works in acrylics and his paintings incorporate a wide variety of styles and techniques, making this a vibrant and richly detailed exhibition.

The Museum of Cannock Chase – on Valley Road, Hednesford – is open from Monday to Friday from 11am to 4pm with last admission at 3.30pm. Admission is free. For more information, call the Museum on 01543 877666 or log onto www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/museum.
