This document shows the amount of barge traffic on the canals in the county by the end of the 18th century.

In 1795 it became necessary to register with the county authorities all barges and other vessels working the canals and navigable rivers. The details recorded included the names of the owner and master of the boat and their place of abode, how much weight the vessel could carry, the size and skills of the crew and the extent of the journey usually navigated by the boat concerned. 531 vessels were registered between August 1795 and September 1797.
