At a public meeting on 23 December 1814, it was resolved to build an infirmary for the working classes, adjoining the existing dispensary building at Snow Hill between Hanley and Stoke. This was the forerunner of the present North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary at Hartshill. The venture was well supported by a large number of local manufacturers. Many of the subscribers were potters such as Spode, Wedgwood, Minton and Davenport, ironmasters such as Hugh Henshall Williamson and colliery owners such as Sir John Heathcote and Thomas Kinnersley, who could see the benefits of the proposed infirmary for their respective workforces.
