By the 16th century, the courts held by Justices of the Peace four times a year, the Quarter Sessions, had become an important part of the administration of justice. The sessions rolls of the Staffordshire Quarter Sessions contain vivid descriptions of violent conduct, as these two examples from the 1590s show.
