The "Goliath" Pump

As the name suggests the "Goliath" pump was huge. In the top right of the photograph you can see one of the balance bobs, which carried counterbalance weights to the pump rods (marked "lot 21"), to reduce the load on the engine. It was brought to Birchenwood after pumping operations at Heath’s Brownhills (Tunstall) colliery ceased on 1 February 1902.
