North Staffordshire coalfields were considered very gassy. To remove the gas from underground, holes were bored into the roof and floor of the coal face at regular intervals and connected together. The gas was utilised in colliery boilers to create steam to drive the winding engines and drainage pumps or sold to local industries. Photograph shows three big boilers.
