The beast of burden with its minder is seen in this photograph taken before the systems of the endless rope and conveyor around 1911. The pony drivers, all boys, had a great respect for them. The ponies only saw daylight one week in twelve months, when miners had their annual week’s holiday. Hundreds of ponies were maimed and killed.
