Miners lives / Leisure

Despite the fact that miners had little leisure time before the 20th century, what free time they did have was filled with a variety of activities. Long hours spent underground made the miner especially keen on spending his leisure time in the open air, like gardening, sports, music and dance. Some collieries had their own football, basketball team or ‘male voice choir’ since the early 20th century.
