An explosion propagated by coal dust, ignited by spontaneous combustion, killed 66 men and boys on 16^th October 1889. This memorial was drawn by George Woodward in 1890, to commemorate the disaster. On 21^st March 1940, an explosion killed 11 men, again as a result of coal dust and spontaneous combustion.
