Extract from the diary of 'C' Squadron of the Staffordshire Yeomanry recording Christmas celebrations in Europe after 'D' Day, December 1944


Monday Dec 25th Christmas day started off quietly with church
Service at 10:30 followed by Holy Communion.
At 11.30 officers and 'NCO',s' and men met in the squadron billet over tow or three barrels of beer. This continued until 13:00, when the men all went downstairs and Christmas dinner was served by officers and Sgt's to the men! On a table full of bottles of English beer and Cognac. Everyone by now was in the Xmas spirit and things went with a swingspeeches made by all officers and W.O.s' After a quiet afternoon, officers proceeded to Officers mess for cocktails and dinner. This developed Later into a very lively party, including the presentation of leg pulling presents from the Xmas tree.
